Appeal launched for new on-call firefighters

An appeal has gone out for on-call firefighters to fill vacancies at stations in Harborough district.

There are vacancies for three firefighters at Harborough, three at Kibworth and two at Billesdon.

On-call or retained firefighters work everyday jobs until the call comes in, when they must rush to deal with a range of emergencies.

Paul Weston, Leicestershire fire Service’s Harborough District Manager, said: “They may be ‘part-time’, but they are trained and capable people in the front line, saving lives. “On-call/part-time Firefighters are well paid for their services, they receive thorough training plus all there is to know about emergency situations.

“On-call/part-time Firefighters do not just fight fires. As an on-call/part-time firefighter you would be involved in a wide variety of situations which can include incidents ranging from floods, road accidents and chemical spills to retrieving pets from awkward situations.”

The service wants men and women. Previous experience is not required thanks to a comprehensive training programme.

Recruits must only be enthusiastic and be in a position to respond quickly to the fire station after being alerted by the bleeper that Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service provides to all its on-call/part-time firefighter personnel. Physical fitness is also of utmost importance.
