A PROJECT working to improve visitor access to the Battle of Naseby site has been awarded a £30,000 lottery grant.

The Naseby Battlefield Project will use the cash to create new viewing platforms to the west of the battlefield which will focus on the site’s wildlife.

It will also pay to train and recruit ten volunteer guides to provide battlefield tours and allow the project to give visitors access to Sulby Hedges, the place in which the first shots of the English Civil War battle, on June 14, 1645, were fired.

With the help of the Field Studies Council’s Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) scheme, the project will work with school groups to carry out pond-dipping and hedgerow study work, from which wildlife interpretation boards will be produced.

The £30,700 grant has been awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Project trustee Martin Marix Evans: “Schoolchildren can see sheep grazing, buzzards circling, deer running and meadow wildflowers in their natural setting. Battlefield enthusiasts are often in the company of family members with interest in wildlife. These, and a host of other observations, have made it clear that the battlefield offers a richer, wider opportunity than historical study alone.”

A documentary marking the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, part of which was filmed at Naseby, will be shown on BBC2 at 8pm this Saturday.
