‘He will be sadly missed’
David Putt
A COMMITTED St John Ambulance volunteer who also played a key role in helping to stage two of Market Harborough’s biggest events has died.
David Putt joined the St John Ambulance as a cadet and remained with the organisation all his life.
He also acted as a health and safety officer helping to put on both the Late Night Shopping and Harborough Carnival events as well as last summer’s Olympic torch procession.
Mr Putt died on December 20 after a battle with cancer.
He was aged 63.
Originally from Caterham, Surrey, Mr Putt started work as a lab technician, working his way up to management roles in health and safety, and later running his own part-time consultancy.
He moved to Harborough with his first wife in the early 1970s and they had a son, Gary, in 1975. He met his second wife Uta in the late 1970s and they married in 1980 and had two sons, Darren, born in 1981 and Chris, born in 1986.
A physically active family, they enjoyed activity holidays including kayaking and mountain biking.
Mr Putt played football and badminton into his 60s and passed on his love of the latter to Darren, who became a county player.
In later years Mr Putt enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and hill-walking with his wife, including recent holidays in the Austrian Alps.
Mr Putt formed the St John Ambulance’s Badger youth group in 1987 and helped promote it by entering a float in the Harborough Carnival parade.
He also formed the committee which helped restore the ambulance hall in Abbey Street, Harborough.
He organised annual trips for the group including river cruises and visits to the National Arboretum.
As a health and safety expert, he provided invaluable advice to help put on a number of town events.
Paul Whitlock, of the town’s St John Ambulance division, said: “David has voluntarily given countless hours of his time in assisting numerous community-minded groups within Harborough.
“He gave so much to the people of the town that the vacuum created will not be easily filled.”
Carnival Committee chairman John Bush said: “David was a wonderful person to work with. As a person he was fun and full of ideas.
“As a health and safety adviser he did his job without a fuss.
“He will be sadly missed.”
