A SHOT at national glory in the Britain in Bloom competition is Harborough’s after it was chosen to represent the east midlands in the large towns category.

The town has been selected for the national section of the Royal Horticultural Society’s prestigious contest in 2013 after winning a gold award in this year’s East Midlands in Bloom competition.

Now the volunteers behind Harborough’s annual In Bloom bid are calling on residents to do their bit to help the town win national honours.

High Street businesses can sign up to have a free hanging basket next year.

And people can also do their bit by making the area outside their homes even more attractive by planting or keeping grass verges well-kempt.

Gordon Etherington, chair of the Market Harborough in Bloom Volunteers, said: “I hope that many local people and businesses will help prepare the town for judging next year.

“The regional judges visit in July and the national judges visit in August. I would love to increase the list of people and organisations we can call on to help us on key occasions like these.”

The town’s In Bloom team was set up by Harborough District Council and has for the last 12 years planned and led the annual efforts to get the town looking its best.

In September they were presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Lady Gretton with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service - the MBE for volunteer groups.

The group has helped win the town numerous awards in the East Midlands in Bloom competition and this is the (HOW MANY) time the town has been invited to compete nationally.

To help the town win the title, the volunteers are offering hanging baskets to all businesses in the High Street next summer free of charge, providing the business agrees to water them.

Mr Etherington said: “They will be given on a first-come first-served basis and we hope lots of businesses take up the offer. If Market Harborough won the cup for Best Large Town in the whole of Britain, it would be an achievement to be very proud of.”

Shops interested in one of the baskets should contact Chris Etherington on 07778 120039 or email: chrispy143@gmail.com
