Lenthall House should not be renamed

I NOTE in the February 9 edition of the Harborough Mail that a private company which is taking over Lenthall House from Leicestershire County Care intends to rename it Harborough Court.

This unique market town should not be turned into a clone town

This is a copy of a letter sent to Cllr Michael Rook at Harborough District Council.

Community asked to suggest sensible alternatives to Fox Yard

OVER the past few weeks this newspaper’s letter pages have been alive with hot debate about the district council’s proposed plans for the council offices and possible consequences for the Market Hall.

Wild and Woolly success

THE Wild and Woolly event held on boxing day last year has raised a grand total of just under £2,000 for charity.

How about a seven-day market?

REGARDING Market Harborough Market Hall, can Cllr Rook tell us all why he wants to get rid of a paying asset?

Half of the population shouldn’t be ignored

IN REPLY to the letter from Chris Lewis in last week’s Mail (February 9), who clearly resents paying for the market hall out of his taxes.

Masterplan will ensure major development of town can move forward swiftly

THE EXECUTIVE of Harborough District Council instigated and voted through on Monday, February 13 the setting up of a Master Planning Panel for Market Harborough’s future development, earmarked for the North West of the town. This was in fact an integral part of the Core Strategy, and not a Liberal Democrat initiative as recent media coverage would appear to suggest!

Keep the river clean - dispose of your litter responsibly

IN response to the recent letters concerning the River Welland in Harborough, I would like to assure those concerned that the river is cleaned on a regular basis. This is done by a team from Self Unlimited.

Cheap family rail tickets is a solution

Further to the recent article in the Harborough Mail headed “Rail users are hit by large fares increase”, I would like to make the following suggestion to rail companies:

Market trader has it summed up

FURTHER to previous letters concerning the council’s plan to move the market traders out of their hall, it would seem relevant to examine the financial aspects of such an upheaval.

Join the bowling club and have fun

CAN anyone tell me why Market Harborough and District Indoor Bowling Club would appear to be in decline? I’m not sure and I’m a member.

The Market Hall is a great asset to the town

I WRITE concerning the proposed arrangements for the Market Hall.

Studies show turbines’ inefficiencies

WITH reference to the letter from David Hankey (Mail, Jan 12) about wind farms, I have some sympathy for Canon Davis.

Charity begins at home!

I ADDRESS this directly to Rachel Morley, Brooke Townsley, Debbie and Simon Jones, Sally Kirke, Jo Beven, Trevor Arthur, Beverly and Paul Felton, Natalie and James Hunt, Sarah and Keith Hamilton, and Rebecca Reeves.

The overwhelming majority want the market left where it is!

That’s how many of your constituents want the market left exactly where it is. That’s well over half the town and going up every day! How long will it take before you understand that your plans are unacceptable.

An explanation on bowling pavilion asbestos

AS local town member, I have been keeping an eye on the issue of asbestos at Welland Park bowls pavilion since it first raised its head.

Don’t let Market Harborough lose its individual market

I AM dismayed to hear that it is proposed to close down and relocate Market Harborough market.

Your thank yous

GARETH Ponting’s family want to thank everyone for donations in his memory. The total of £487.54 was given to the RNLI.

Great Bowden lime tree catastrophe

THE CLANDESTINE felling of the Great Bowden lime trees (Mail, Feb 2) comes as no great surprise to anyone familiar with the disgusting tactics used by building companies.

Which would you choose?

AFTER reading about Councillor Rook paying a visit to the market last week, just what did he expect, a red carpet to welcome him?

The market traders are victims of Tory discomfort

IT IS disturbing to hear that market traders have been told recently that the Market Hall is closing, or finished.

Thanks for coming

MARLOW House would like to thank those people who attended their Festive Week of Christmas Lunches, Amazing value and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended! The take up was so good they may be extended this year.

Not everyone supports the Market Hall traders

IT is with little surprise that I see the Mail’s letters pages once again dominated by yet another ‘grand protest’ by some of our town’s residents.

Young workers were frozen stiff

ON SATURDAY afternoon, in what seemed like -10 C, I felt very sorry for two young people who were standing outside Sainsbury’s giving out Argos catalogues.

What will happen to the Antiques Market?

RECENTLY on an icy, bitterly cold day we went to the market hall for some meat (at Rosses, who have a proper butcher’s stall with chillers etc, and arguably the best meat in Harborough).

Are magic carpets part of council proposal?

I have just been reading the latest headlines in the Mail: we’re not happy with the proposed pedestrianisation of Adam & Eve Street.

A remedy must be found for this disease

ONE cannot help but think that there is a terrible disease affecting councillors that is spreading up the A6 like wildfire.

What About the wonderful Sunday Market?

ON Sunday, January 22, we visited the Market Harborough Sunday market.

The Sunday market is a most enjoyable shopping experience

HAVING heard of the proposals for the Market Hall I felt I had to write and express my dismay.

Why not Market Harborough Town/Parish Council?

LUTTERWORTH and Broughton Astley have town/parish councils, so why not Market Harborough?

A passport to enter Harborough?

THE German take-over of St Mary’s Place, resulting in the closure of Walker’s bookshop, may only be the start of something bigger.

We need to protect the unique character of the town

MANY visitors to my bookshop congratulate Market Harborough for keeping its distinctive character.

The obvious market site is The Square

THE council’s broad proposals are based on many assumptions, not the least of which is the questionable level of demand for more retail space.

Market Harborough should not become a town full of super stores

A COPY OF A LETTER SENT TO COUNCILLOR ROOK

Please keep the Market Hall where it is.

WE visit Market Harborough a lot, as it is a nice place for shopping, unlike Northampton town centre, which we do not visit very often.

I can see stars, what joy

“LOOK at the stars! Look, look up at the skies!

Rotary Club gives thanks for charity collections

ROTARIANS were on the streets in Market Harborough from early on Christmas Eve, to collect for two local charities. The response from local shoppers was very generous, considering the tough economic times. A total of £650 was given by shoppers to two local causes. Thank you very much.

Government should provide for pensioners, not travellers

WHAT do I think of a £440,000 pot for extra pitches for travellers? In one word – disgust.

It’s a battle for our countryside

CANON Davis’s letter (January 5) in support of wind farms is ill-informed.

Let travellers pay for their plots

ARE we going mad? Regarding the Government’s allocation of £4.6m to find new sites for traveller and gypsy sites in Leicestershire, with £440,000 being generously donated to the Harborough district, I calculate that this works out at over £82,000 per plot, of which five will appear somewhere near here.

Walkers recall enchanting otter encounter

ON the subject of otter spotting, on the evening of March 2 last year, my Nordic Walking group were walking through Welland Park when we were informed by a dog walker coming from the opposite direction that there were otters ‘down there’.

We add our voices to the protest

We visit the market on a regular basis, mainly on Sundays for the antique and collectors market, but have been known to pop in on an occasional Saturday.

People should be more vocal about saving the market

FOR the council to suggest moving the market to the dismal area behind the council offices is insulting, both to the stallholders and to their loyal customers.

How about a covered open-air town centre?

IT would again appear that Harborough District Council has ‘wisely’ spent rate-payers’ money by hiring a team of regeneration ‘experts’ to tell them something they had already decided! (See Harborough Mails before Christmas).

Sell Fox Yard to a retailer

HERE’S an idea for that would preserve the Market Hall, provide the council with some money and attract a major retail outlet.

This is not the best site for the market

IS Fox Yard the best site for the market? My answer is no.

Put the councillors outside

THE solution to Harborough District Council’s market re-location problem is so simple I’m surprised that the councillors didn’t think of it themselves.

Market move is an idiotic idea

HAS council leader Michael Rook completely lost his mind? Has he decided to destroy Market Harborough totally?

Writer looking for people who grew up in London during the 1940

FOLLOWING my book covering London in the 1920s and a subsequent publication on Soho to be released in March this year, my publishers have requested that I now produce a title concerning London during the 1940s.
