An explanation on bowling pavilion asbestos
AS local town member, I have been keeping an eye on the issue of asbestos at Welland Park bowls pavilion since it first raised its head.
I wish to make it clear that Liberal Democrat intervention has in no way expedited completion of the matter, as implied in the recent (January 19) comment in The Mail.
As part of a routine inspection in August 2011 by Harborough District Council of the council-owned bowls pavilion in Welland Park, Harborough, it was found that asbestos was present in the ceiling which needed attention.
Officers took immediate steps to close and secure the building to protect members of the public.
The particles were tested by a specialist laboratory and found to contain low grade asbestos.
A plan to remove and dispose of the asbestos in an approved manner was formulated in conjunction with the bowls club.
A notice appeared in the Harborough Mail to that effect at the time.
A specialist disposal company has been appointed to remove the ceiling in its entirety and on completion the building will be reinstated with plasterboard and skim-coated.
All work will be completed prior to the commencement of the bowling club’s annual licence to occupy the pavilion on April 1, 2012.
Only if that does not happen will I consider a failure to have occurred.
Cllr Dr P Bremner,
Harborough Conservative Association.
