Cheap family rail tickets is a solution

Further to the recent article in the Harborough Mail headed “Rail users are hit by large fares increase”, I would like to make the following suggestion to rail companies:

Why don’t rail companies offer a cheap family ticket on Sundays, as a way of encouraging families to use trains?

As a family, we would love to go on the train to London, but at a cost of over £125 we cannot justify going by train, so would have to drive.

If the rail companies were to charge a nominal fee of, say, £10 per person, we would gladly jump on a train for the day.

I’m sure other families would too as this would be exceptional value, and would save us using our cars.

After all, the train would be running anyway, probably nearly empty, so surely better to get a few extra pounds in the till and cars off the road; this could go some way towards subsidising other train fare increases.

They could operate this as a special offer, eg first Sunday of the month.
