Community asked to suggest sensible alternatives to Fox Yard
OVER the past few weeks this newspaper’s letter pages have been alive with hot debate about the district council’s proposed plans for the council offices and possible consequences for the Market Hall.
This fundamental change seems to be frightening some sections of the community even though at this time nothing has been confirmed.
There is a preferred option but the business case for this has yet to be proven. Any changes to the council offices and the town centre can’t be made until this has been done.
As frightening as it may be, change must take place in order to combat increasing costs. It is necessary to take a positive attitude towards change searching for solutions to the problems.
As one of the Conservative councillors for Little Bowden I have my own thoughts on this subject, but I do agree that change must take place whatever it may ultimately be.
The council last week issued a consultation process on the plans and this can be found on its web page. This consultation will be available on the internet and also paper copies from the library. I call upon the people of Market Harborough and districts to embrace this consultation process so that more ideas can be shared from the silent majority rather than just those who express themselves in the newspapers.
Fox Yard may be the wrong place for a market so let the council hear sensible alternatives!
I would like to see the market in a central location with an increase in its size, products sold and more healthy competition. I have been lucky in my life to have visited many markets internationally and all of them seem to benefit from the increased foot fall of passing customers when they trade in an open but sheltered environment.
Please get involved in the consultation process on future plans. Everyone who has a vested interest in how their money is spent should participate. It is down to Harborough district council tax payers as to how we try to keep our taxes down, not other people who pay their taxes elsewhere!
Cllr Derek Evans,
(Little Bowden Ward).
