Half of the population shouldn’t be ignored

IN REPLY to the letter from Chris Lewis in last week’s Mail (February 9), who clearly resents paying for the market hall out of his taxes.

Well Mr Lewis, I suppose if we were all to go down that extremist route, I could also object to paying for things out of my taxes too.

I don’t have children, so I suppose I could resent paying for your children’s education. I don’t use the leisure centre or the library, so I suppose I could also get bitter about paying for these facilities too. But the fact is, we live in the real world; we are all members of our respective communities. I’m afraid Mr Lewis this also means that we contribute to our society. We can’t just stop paying for local amenities because we don’t particularly like them or because we don’t use them. Get real!!

And for those of you who can actually do your maths or be bothered to do your research, the current population of Market Harborough is around 20,800 NOT 75,000 as he remarked. I would say that the petition of around 9,500 is close to HALF of the town’s population who are asking for the market hall to stay. For an elected member of any particular body, to ignore these figures would surely be setting a very dangerous precedent.

Some people are comparing Councillor Rook with Dr Beeching. However, to simply ignore such a large proportion of the population would surely put him on a par with far more dubious figures from world history!

James Steerforth,

Shrewsbury Avenue,

Harborough.
