It’s a battle for our countryside

CANON Davis’s letter (January 5) in support of wind farms is ill-informed.

The need for non-fossil energy is understood.

Erecting hundreds of turbines in Northamptonshire is not the answer because of the following reasons:

l England delivers little electricity through wind turbines, and the East Midlands is one of England’s least windy regions, with below 20 per cent effectiveness.

l Wind power is not cost-effective. We electricity customers heavily subsidise energy companies through our bills.

l Because wind power is intermittent, it requires continuous back-up from traditional fuels.

As reports from Civitas, Eire and The Netherlands confirm, uneven resort demand on traditional backup means more CO2 is emitted, more than offsetting wind energy’s initial advantage.

We will demand compensation for health and safety as in Lincolnshire, where compensation has been paid, houses are unsellable, and council tax bands slashed.

Kelmarsh will need 600 x 20 ton lorries of cement for foundations, causing massive CO2 emissions.

Northampton has met its wind target; why do more when wind speeds are so low?

The A14 has attracted more wind farms than anywhere else because of easy access and planning, not because of effective wind power.

The localism promised by this Government is dead – our local authorities objected to the Kelmarsh proposal, yet a solitary planning inspector rode roughshod over every opposing argument!

Clearly, neither the Planning Inspectorate nor the real powers in this Government care a fig for protecting our historic assets – whether they be great battlefields, houses, or landscapes.

Canon Davis, please consult independent energy experts and listen to our community?
