Lenthall House should not be renamed
I NOTE in the February 9 edition of the Harborough Mail that a private company which is taking over Lenthall House from Leicestershire County Care intends to rename it Harborough Court.
On behalf of the many people in the area who care about our heritage this seems a gross disregard of those names in and around the southern estate which are associated with Harborough and its role in the English Civil War and the Battle of Naseby.
With plans being drawn up for a Naseby Battlefield Centre and with the existing Civil War Trail around town, surely we do not want an undermining of our heritage?
William Lenthall was the Speaker of the House of Commons at the time of the Civil War and there is a plaque in his honour in Lenthall Square. It was to him that Cromwell wrote of the great victory at Naseby after the battle. A change of name would detract from remembering these significant events.
For those wishing to support The Naseby Battlefield Project they can learn more by going to the website at www.naseby.com or write to Naseby Battlefield Project, Glinton Cottage, Sibbertoft, near Market Harborough, LE16 9UJ.
