Not everyone supports the Market Hall traders

IT is with little surprise that I see the Mail’s letters pages once again dominated by yet another ‘grand protest’ by some of our town’s residents.

Despite being aware of the potential volley of second-hand shoes and naff table decorations that the market traders will want to launch upon me, I am going to stick my head above the parapet and, with the editor’s kind permission, attempt to provide some balance to this ‘debate’.

I have four points.

Number one.

The Market Hall is currently massively subsidised by the local taxpayer.

Yes, that’s right, whether you are one of the market’s biggest fans, or know nothing of its existence, every household across the district is paying money to keep this service open.

When my family and thousands like mine are struggling to make ends meet, I find it ludicrous that the market traders think it is fair to charge us indiscriminately for a ‘service’ we might never use.

Number two.

I read the letter of John Cleaver, one of the ‘big wigs’ of the market folk, and spluttered to see his comments about ‘wi-fi’. If his sort need ‘wi-fi’ to sell a few vegetables, they should pay for it themselves!

Do not tax me so you can use the internet, no doubt, to organise further protests against those who keep you in business!

Number three.

Congratulations to Michael Rook for going in to the market and standing up to these people. It’s refreshing to see a politician give scroungers what for!

Those ridiculous leaflets showed how childish these market traders are.

Excuse me – Councillor Rook was elected by the people, and it appears for good reason!

Mr Rook, I congratulate you and implore, nay require, you to do all you can to get the best out of my hard-earned council tax.

Number four.

9,000 people signed the petition. That means at least 75,000 Harborough residents didn’t. So realise that NOT EVERYONE SUPPORTS YOU.

The Harborough I am proud to live in is one of a mix of shops that caters for all.

The market is a nice part of that, but it is not the whole picture!

End this tax-guzzling, anti-democratic shrieking and begin a change for greater value for taxpayers across the district – not just in Market Harborough.

Chris Lewis,

Weir Road,

Kibworth Beauchamp.

MR C LEWIS, HAS A FEW FACTS WRONG, THE MARKET TRADERS DO NOT STAND IN THE HALL FOR NOTHING THEY PAY FOR THE PRIVILEGE, THE MARKET BRINGS IN HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE FROM THE SURROUNDING AREAS EVERY SUNDAY , THE PEOPLE WHO COME SPEND MONEY AND SO HELP TO GENERATE A HEALTHY ECONOMY . IF THE CONSERVATIVE COUNCIL LISTEN TO OUR WONDERFUL PRIME MINISTER HE WANT COUNCILS TO REGENERATE AND SUPPORT TOWN CENTRE`S NOT DESTROY THEM . IF WE DO LOSE THE MARKET WILL THE TOWN HAVE TO CHANGE ITS NAME TO SUPERMARKET HARBOROUGH ?
