Rotary Club gives thanks for charity collections

ROTARIANS were on the streets in Market Harborough from early on Christmas Eve, to collect for two local charities. The response from local shoppers was very generous, considering the tough economic times. A total of £650 was given by shoppers to two local causes. Thank you very much.

Funds were for the Market Harborough Medical Centre to support “DESMOND” (Diabetes Education and Self-Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed). This is a short, but effective, course to help people manage their Type 2 diabetes, led by the Diabetes Specialist Nurse. This course is also supported by the local Diabetes UK group which meets on the first Thursday each month, in the Settling Rooms, starting at 7.30pm.

The second charity was The Market Harborough Dementia Cafe - a group of people who suffer from Dementia, and their carers, who meet on the third Thursday each month, 1-3pm over a cup of tea and cakes, at St Dionysius’ Community Hall, Coventry Road. This group offers gentle, local support.

Last year the similar collection raised £674 which was given to Peoples’ Accessible Transport for Harborough - PATH, and the Air Ambulance. So giving was just about the same as last year, which is of great credit to the people who gave.

The Rotary club is pleased to support these, and other charities, by both volunteering and money raising. For more information about being a Rotarian, see www.rotarymarketharborough.org.uk.

The next major Rotary event in Market Harborough will be the club’s second SwiMarathon at the Leisure Centre on April 21 and 22. To enter a team of swimmers, or to support the event by sponsorship, see the club’s website or email swimarathon@rotarymarketharborough.org.uk.
