The obvious market site is The Square

THE council’s broad proposals are based on many assumptions, not the least of which is the questionable level of demand for more retail space.

But the proposal to put an outdoor market in Fox’s Yard takes the biscuit.

Fox’s yard is an obscure place, not obvious to passing traffic and visitors.

Motor access for traders and others would be through residential areas.

Parking would be reduced and traffic increased in an already clogged-up part of town. It is not on a major bus route and is difficult to see how it could be.

It is a miserable place, neither conducive to a good “retail experience”, nor a vibrant market.

From a shopper’s, resident’s and visitor’s point of view, the screamingly obvious site for an outdoor market is The Square, which suffers from none of the above, and has the added benefit of linking all parts of the town.

I could, therefore, bear to know the rationale for favouring Fox’s Yard.

One suspects it is merely to support the council’s other proposals – or perhaps put forward by those who don’t visit or shop often?
