This is not the best site for the market
IS Fox Yard the best site for the market? My answer is no.
It would seem to me that the council just wants to get rid of the market by coming up with ideas as in last week’s Harborough Mail, moving the market to Fox Yard.
Would this be a covered-in market? Of course not. Will it just be stalls in an open yard? Yes. Will shops move into the now-council offices on the ground floor at a time when shops in the town are closing or having a very hard time? Again, of course not.
It would appear that the council offices are far too big for their needs if they can give up the ground floor for shops.
This begs the question, why did the council move there in the first place years ago? According to reports some time ago, the whole Victorian building which houses the council offices is in great need of repair which would cost thousands, if not millions, of pounds to repair, when the council says it needs to save £3m during the next five years.
Would it not be an idea to sell the council offices and turn them into flats considering the so-called housing shortage?
Then the council could acquire the old Ritz cinema in Northampton Road, which has been an eyesore for long enough, for its offices.
This would then leave the Market Hall in Northampton Road. Alone, the sale of the council offices would create enough funds to cover the cost of new offices and should help towards the saving of £3m.
The pulling down of the old Market Hall and the removal of the cattle market, etc to make way for our shopping complex was a bad day.
Please councillors and people of Harborough and district, don’t let the market go from Market Harborough after over 800 years.
