Walkers recall enchanting otter encounter
ON the subject of otter spotting, on the evening of March 2 last year, my Nordic Walking group were walking through Welland Park when we were informed by a dog walker coming from the opposite direction that there were otters ‘down there’.
Our first reaction was that she must have seen rats, of which there are plenty by the Welland, but loud splashing noises led us to investigate, and we saw, to our delight, what we thought were three otters playing in the water.
We watched them for a few minutes and then continued our walk downstream to find that the otters appeared to be following us.
As we neared the Co-op car park, we thought we had lost them, only to see them pop up again at the St Mary’s Place bridge.
We leaned over the well-lit bridge watching them play, oblivious to the bright lights and noisy youngsters on a nearby bench, for quite some time.
With the added light, we could see that there were, in fact, four of them. When we’d had our fill of this enchanting encounter, we continued our walk and, although we regularly walked through Welland Park after dark, we never sew them again.
We like to think that they were intrigued by Nordic Walking, but an otter expert told us that it was most likely to be a mother teaching her offspring to cope with high water levels.
