What About the wonderful Sunday Market?

ON Sunday, January 22, we visited the Market Harborough Sunday market.

This is something we have done several hundred times since moving to the town 10 years ago.

So far, letters about the future of our Market Hall seem to have ignored this valuable weekly event, which, at 11am, was attracting at least 200 visitors.

Not only do we visit the Sunday market, we buy and less often, sell there – books, old photographs, postcards, cameras and vintage clothing, to name just a few categories.

None of these items would be suitable for selling on outdoor stalls.

I suggest that Councillor Rook and his advisers do some R and D by setting up a stall in Fox Yard from 8am to 4pm, stocked with similar products, and see how they fare in our current weather conditions.

One sad aspect of this debacle is the lack of appreciation of the cultural value of the markets, particularly on Sundays.

Apart from many interesting conversations, purchases have led in my case to research and a published book.

There are few places for the general public to congregate in our town.

I’ve often thought that the market building could accommodate a small gallery for local visual artists to hire.

What this town needs is more diversity of shops and market traders, not less.

The alternative seems to be the inevitable growth of national chains where choice to the customer is decided far away from Market Harborough.
