Why not Market Harborough Town/Parish Council?

LUTTERWORTH and Broughton Astley have town/parish councils, so why not Market Harborough?

I believe only 2,000 signatures would be necessary to set the wheels in motion.

Town councils have only limited powers, but they do get a budget allocation with which to manage local amenities (eg parking and toilets).

Our district council is hoping to gain £50,000 by selling off OUR Market Hall to some, as yet undisclosed, retail outlet and create a Bermuda Triangle for traders around Fox Square.

I hear the vultures are already circling – £50,000, WOW! Defined as a local amenity by a Market Harborough Town Council, I reckon the Market Hall would require something like an additional council tax levy of £1 per annum to match this!

Meanwhile, Lutterworth will continue to enjoy first-hour-free parking, while Market Harborough residents face a 40 per cent increase! Maybe Lutterworth Town Council has something to do with this.

James Lever,

Dunslade Close,

Harborough.
