Police youth scheme returns to Desborough

Desborough will be saying ‘YES’ again in the next few weeks when the Youth Engagement Scheme returns to the town.

Police Community Support Officer Jayne Breeze, of the Kettering Safer Community Team, will involve Desborough-based firefighters in the scheme.

The firefighters and the SCT will deliver a programme of activity on Saturday and Sunday mornings over a six-week period at Desborough, Burton Latimer and Kettering fire stations.

Between eight and 12 young people will attend the course which will finish with a passing-out parade.

PCSO Breeze said: “YES has been developed to inspire young people and to give them confidence and help build positive relationships between fire crews, safer community teams and local young people.

“It is hoped that this positive interaction will help reduce nuisance fire crimes and to divert young people away from anti-social behaviour, so building a positive relationship within the community.”

The youngsters will take part in core fire service activities such as kit inspections, parade and drills.

They will also learn how to work as part of a formal team using fire-fighting equipment and techniques, with awareness of health and safety risks and procedures.

Alongside the physical outdoor activities, the young people will also take part in classroom based sessions covering drug and alcohol awareness, knife and gun crime, anti-social behaviour, arson, police and fire dogs, police fitness bleep test (provided by members of the SCT) and the policing family and fire service staff.
