Pub planning battle set for appeal hearing

AN APPEAL hearing over controversial plans to knock down a former village pub and replace it with seven homes will be held next month.

It is taking place after Langton Homes appealed against a decision by Harborough District Council to turn down their plans for the former Bulls Head pub in Tur Langton.

The developer lodged plans for the homes, three of which would be affordable housing, in April last year.

It said the development would contribute toward affordable housing needs in the district while finding a use for a site which has fallen into disrepair.

But the application attracted objections from some nearby residents as well as Tur Langton Parish Council, which said the site lay outside of the boundary for development and said the project did not “respect the natural history” of the village.

The district council backed the parish council’s view, ruling that the homes would extend 60 metres outside the limits of development.

In its decision to turn down the application back in June, the council said: “This is contrary to the character of the rural settlement and the surrounding countryside and is unacceptable in a village which is not considered suitable for any more than very limited infill development.”

In its appeal, Langton Homes said it will demonstrate why development outside of the boundary is justified.

Langton Homes also state the homes would contribute to the council’s need to demonstrate a five-year housing supply, as set down by Government.

The one-day appeal hearing will be held at Harborough Innovation Centre at the Airfield Business Park off the B6047 north of Harborough from 10am on Wednesday, February 27.
