READERS' PHOTOS January-May 2010

THESE are the first trench of super pictures submitted to the Mail by readers in the first half of 2010.

The Mail's website section for readers' photos continues to grow, with the World Cup providing some red and white inspiration.

Martin Lyons snapped a wonderful old Alvis car as it pulled into Riverside Industrial Estate in Harborough this week.

Mary Blockley took this photo of the Roman Way/The Broadway roundabout on Saturday.

"World Cup football fever has taken over the town," she said in an email.

Kathryn Allen, who works at town firm Dorotape, also sent us a photo of their England-inspired new mural.

Other recent photos had an animal theme.

Adam Shepherd, of Harborough, took the snap of these birds feeding at Rutland Bird Sanctuary while he was on a basic photography course.

Phil Courtney, of Arthingworth, sent us the wood pigeon pics. He said: "They kept us entertained and enthralled for three weeeks from the chicks hatching to them finally flying the nest and we felt incredibly privileged to witness something so special."

At the other end of the scale, Gerry Williams, of Essex Gardens, Harborough, snapped a pic of a sparrowhawk devouring a blackbird in his garden.

Other recent submissions include more pics from regular contributors Roger and Amelita Pollard.

Mr Pollard sent us a cute photo of duckilings following their mum along the Grand Union Canal in Harborough while his wife Amelita sent us a striking poink spring blossom.

Martin Lyons took a photo of an oil seed rape field between Desborough and Market Harborough.

John Lambert recently took a photo from his bedroom window of a heron on a rooftop in Overdale Road, Harborough.

Bob Hakewill sent us two photos of a woodmouse in his Lubenham Hill garden which managed to find its way into a bird-feeder.

"The seed-feeder is squirrel-proof but not woodmouse proof." he says.

Brilliant recent submissions also include this confused street sign in Roman Way, sent in by Kathy Davison, who lives in the street.

Standing in front of a completely blocked-off pavement and clearly intended for use on a road, it reads: "Footpath closed, wait for assistance."

There could be a long wait! Maybe workmen will offer piggy-backs? Thanks for the brillaint photo Kathy.

A funny snap of a squirrel getting romantic with an owl statuette was also sent in by Mr D. Lightfoot of Harborough

And Adam Shepherd took a photo of a rather obvious impediment to the highway in the Commons car park in Harborough while Kayleigh Buswell took some amazing wildlife photos.

Have you got some breaking news photos? Over the past few years, citizen journalists in the Harborough area have send in pictures of burning cars, crime incidents and other news items which have been publichsed in the Mail.

To send photos, email the deputy editor at alex.blackwell@harboroughmail.co.uk.

Try to send photos individually as huge-megabyte files will not always get through.

Some of your snaps will also be published in the Mail as well as online.
