Stations decision is due this month

AMBULANCE bosses will meet later this month to finalise plans for the future of Harborough and Lutterworth’s ambulance stations.

EMAS announced in May that up to 55 of the region’s 66 stations could be axed to save £13m.

Across the region EMAS plans to replace its 66 stations with Community Ambulance Post and standby points, where crews will wait for calls but which do not have rest facilities.

It also plans to establish purpose-built hubs or ‘super stations’ in key towns and cities across the region.

EMAS says the changes will improve response times and make the service more efficient but the proposals have met with opposition from health campaigners, who fear longer response times.

A public consultation launched in September reveal proposals to close the station in Leicester Road, Harborough in favour of a Community Ambulance Post.

Lutterworth’s station in Gilmorton Road looks set to continue to be used after EMAS agreed a deal with the landlords, though its role will be reduced to that of a community standby point.

The 13-week consultation closed on Monday, December 17

A spokesman for EMAS said: “We have made a commitment to consider all feedback. A report will be produced to detail the feedback and responses received. Work will also continue to develop the proposal so they can reflect the feedback that is helping to improve the plans.”

The EMAS Trust Board is set to meet next Thursday (January 10), said the spokesman, for an extraordinary meeting to review the report and the feedback received during the consultation.

The final plans will be reviewed and discussed at the Trust Board meeting on Monday, January 28, with the final decision to be made public the following day.
