MORE than 60 young people braved minus temperatures to take on the challenges of a nightwalk.

Youngsters from five separate youth clubs from around Northamptonshire took part in the event run by Great Oxendon Youth Club.

The five mile walk started at Braybrooke and followed foothpaths and bridleways across fields and woods, onto the Brampton Valley Way, through old railway tunnels and over more fields before arriving at Great Oxendon Village Hall during the night.

It brought the local youth clubs together, including representatives from Northampton youth forum and Northampton Association of Youth Clubs, for the fourth nightwalk run by the Great Oxendon team.

The walk was on one of the coldest nights of the winter with temperatures falling to -8C, making the ground frozen rather than muddy, and creating awkward terrain.

Not only did the young people face the difficult terrain and freezing weather, they were spooked by ghost stories whilst walking through the old railway tunnels, including that of ‘the headless horse rider’, ‘dead man’s hut’ and ‘the Oxendon monk’ – a legless hooded ghost who has been reported floating a little above the ground around the area.

After the nightwalk, everyone was treated to hot soup, hot dogs and cakes in the village hall (with special thanks to Tony with help from Tom and Chelsea).

Youth club leader Rob Barker has been doing nightwalks for over 20 years and said: “They can be quite hard going and are mainly for endurance and enjoyment as walking through the countryside is something that not everyone can do.”

Nightwalks are one of the most popular activities at the youth club – ice skating, pancake making, go-karting and camping are also on the club agenda.

Great Oxendon Youth Club is open every Tuesday evening from 7 until 9.30pm in the Village Hall and is for young people aged upwards from nine years old.
