BITTERSWEET comedy Steel Magnolias is being staged by Kibworth Theatre Company for four nights, starting from tomorrow (Friday, Nov 21).
It was a 1987 Broadway hit which was made into a successful 1989 Hollywood movie starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Julia Roberts and Daryl Hannah.
The play focuses on the loves, lives and losses of six women in small town Louisiana, charting the interwoven courses of their lives and is set in a beauty parlour.
Publicity officer for the group Jennie Palmer-Vines said: "The women are all of different ages, fortunes and temperaments, united by a feisty self-confidence, irrepressible humour and steely fortitude in the face of life's setbacks.
"It is a beautiful, bittersweet comedy and unites six very special friends who are bonded together by mutual triumphs and tragedies, charting the course of their lives over a period of two- and-a-half years."
Despite their differences impulsive Shelby (Emily Mawer), her strong-willed mother M'Lynn (Nicky Mawer), beauty parlour owner Truvy (Sue Wyburn), elegant wealthy widow Clairee (Carol Townend), sharp-tongued Ouiser (Ingrid Cooke) and newcomer Annelle (Katie Washington) enjoy a friendship that spans the boundaries of age and status.
Sharing each other's strength and loyalty, these remarkable women survive the cycles of life, birth and death to emerge stronger, closer and still laughing.
It is being staged tomorrow (Friday, Nov 21) and Saturday (Nov 22) and the following Friday (Nov 28) and Saturday (Nov 29) at Kibworth Grammar School Hall, School Road, Kibworth, from 7.30pm.
Tickets cost £6 (£5 concessions) and are available from sponsors Kibworth DIY in Fleckney Road, Kibworth, or from Great Glen Post Office in Stretton Road.
