A RETIRED scientist hit upon a novel way of having his book published - electronically on Amazon’s Kindle store.

Peter Craig (68), of Kibworth, sent copies of his work, A Greater Power, to a number of publishing companies but had no takers.

Undeterred, and having received a number of positive independent reviews, Mr Craig decided to publish it online.

However that brought complications of its own: Mr Craig had to proof and edit the work himself as well as format the document - with the help of wife Carole and friend Ron MacDonald - so it could be downloaded and read on Kindle electronic readers.

Mr Craig later discovered he couldn’t publish it under his own name as there is already an author named Peter Craig in California.

The book - a love story spanning the 20th century - is authored by PJ Craig as a result.

A former scientist who worked for ICI and latterly as head of chemistry at Leicester De Montofort University, Mr Craig has written numerous articles for New Scientist but this is his first published novel.

A story of love, war and betrayal, it depicts some of the great events of the last century, including the world wars and the onset of the nuclear age, as seen through the eyes of main characters Harry Oldham and Lottie Simplon.

Priced £2.55, it is available for download here
