Murderous Broadway hit

MURDER and revenge are the themes in Harborough Drama Society's latest play.

The group is staging the powerful Broadway hit Translations, by Brian Friel, at Harborough Theatre in Church Square from Monday, April 26, until Saturday, May 1.

Northern Irish dramatist, theatre director and author Friel has won a host of awards over the last three decades and his other works include Philadelphia, Here I Come, The Freedom of the City, Molly Sweeney and several Anton Chekov adaptations.

Translations premiered in the 1980s and was a hit on Broadway.

Set in County Donegal, a detachment of the Royal Engineers is sent on behalf of the British Army to make the first Ordnance Survey. A British soldier falls for an Irish peasant girl, but his murder causes the army to seek revenge.

Directing for Harborough Drama Society is John Foreman.

A spokesman for the group said: "This not-to-be-missed play also explores cultural imperialism and the power of language."

It opens at the theatre with a gala night on Monday, April 26, and runs every evening until Saturday, May 1.

There will also be a 3pm matinee performance on the Saturday afternoon.

Tickets, costing 5-9, are available from Harborough District Council's offices in Adam and Eve Street, Harborough.
