Nimrod jet ready for action at open day

THE APPEARANCE of a former RAF giant promises to be the highlight of an airfield's open day.

The Nimrod jet will perform 'fast taxi' runs at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground's Cold War Jets open day on Sunday (May 30).

The huge plane was formerly used for reconnaisance by the RAF but flew into Bruntingthorpe last month where it will spend its retirement.

It will carry out a number of high speed runs throughout the open day along the airfield's two-mile runway.

The day will also feature a flypast by the Lancaster bomber from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight as well as fast taxi runs by other jets in the Cold War collection, including the Buccaneer, Jet Provosts, Iskra and Hunter.

A large number of static aircraft will also be available to view, including the ex-RAF VC10, the Luftwaffe Lockheed F-104G Starfighter and examples of both Royal Navy and RAF Buccaneers.

Organiser of the event, Dave Walton, said: "This is a really great day out for all of the family, who will have the chance to experience the unique, and spectacular, sights and sounds of our collection of aircraft, all of which have long retired from active service, but which helped to keep us all safe during the Cold War.

"The icing on the cake, of course, will be for the public to see the Nimrod carry out a fast taxi run for the first time in private hands."
