Seaside in landlocked Harborough today
CHILDREN can enjoy a trip to the seaside today (Tuesday) and tomorrow without having to leave Harborough as giant sandpits make their annual visit to the town.
This year the popular Harborough-by-the-Sea event is being spread over two days.
Giant sandpits will be placed in The Square today and tomorrow for children to enjoy between 10am and 4pm each day, with free buckets and spades handed out to youngsters.
The town's Welland Park will also play host to a variety of fun activities from midday to 4pm on the Wednesday to coincide with national Play Day – a Government-backed charity initiative to encourage more youngsters to get active.
The fun-filled free event for children and families, organised by Harborough Improvement Team (HIT), is now in its sixth year.
The event has been sponsored this year by Market Harborough Building Society, which is supplying the buckets and spades for children to use.
Louise Bunce, the building society's head of sales and marketing, said: "It is great to support such a popular event and is an opportunity for us to engage with our customers of the future."
Chris Sewart, of HIT, said: "We've had such great feedback from previous events we're running two full days in the town this year.
"In these cost-conscious times this is an opportunity for families to come and enjoy some free fun."
The theme for this year's event is 'My Place', celebrating the diverse range of cultures around Harborough District.
Visitors are asked to come in international fancy dress and prizes will be handed out for the best outfits.
The Square has a variety of activities on offer, ranging from building sandcastles, metal detecting and the historic town trail to Harborough Museum where there will be a host of fun activities.
Harborough District Council's waste management team will be joining the sandpit event on The Square on the Tuesday with a waste road show offering advice and information on recycling services.
Re-useable bags will also be given out to people bringing along old carrier bags for disposal.
Once again, rickshaw rides will be available to Welland Park for more fun on the Wednesday, including face painting from 'Funtastic Faces' and the chance to make a Seed Head creation with Harborough in Bloom volunteers.
There will be an outdoor wriggly reader session for younger children and Happy Jazz will provide musical entertainment throughout the afternoon in the bandstand.
