Talented musicians have got the X factor
A COMPETITION has given young people in Great Bowden the chance to showcase their musical skills.
In its second year, the Junior X Factor contest is organised by the Great Bowden Recital Trust charity.
The competition was open to young people from school years 1 to 13 living within ten miles of Great Bowden.
Entrants could perform solo or as part of a group and vocalists were welcome as well as those on musical instruments.
A total of 70 performers came forward to compete in three heats before being whittled down to 20 by a panel of judges.
Trustees Andrew and Kathryn Cartwright joined up with Tracey Richards and Pat Oakley to judge the contest, held throughout last month.
The overall winner was singer Clare Pooley, of Harborough's Welland Park College. She won first place after a moving rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Pie Jesu.
In second place was Greg Burns, who attends Kibworth High School.A drummer, Greg was said to have played a "complex and cool" piece.
Third prize was awarded to Shannon Bedford from Harborough's Robert Smyth School, who sang a soulful version of Eva Cassidy's Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
All three winners were presented with an engraved glass trophy, with overall winner Clare being given 100 of vouchers from Harborough store ABC Music, of St Mary's Road.
There was also a special prize for most promising performer of an orchestral instrument, which went to Joshua Watson of Harborough's Farndon Fields Primary School. He plays cornet and was awarded funding for six months' worth of music lessons.
The winners of each heat were also given 50 of ABC Music vouchers, kindly donated by the firm's owner Matt Hankins.
The Great Bowden Recital Trust aims to encourage musical development.
