Unbridled passion and horse worship in controversial play
A POPULAR but controversial former West End play will ride into Harborough this September.
Equus - a story about a young man with a pathological, religious and sexual fascination with horses - will be staged at Harborough Theatre.
Written by Peter Shaffer in 1973, the gritty drama explores the struggles of the young man, Alan Strang, and his psychiatrist, Dysart, as they both come to terms with their demons.
The original production of Equus played in London's West End and then Broadway.
It won numerous awards and was famously revived in 2007 for the West End with Daniel Radcliffe, of Harry Potter fame, playing the lead role.
It is being staged in Harborough by Leicester's 11hr Productions.
Their version, starring 18-year-old Tom Clements as Strang and John Lloyd as Dysart, won third prize in the Leicester and Rutland Full Length Play Festival earlier this year and received rave reviews from audiences attending Leicester's Y Theatre back in February.
Audiences should note that, due to scenes of nudity and the adult nature of the play, it is not suitable for children.
Harborough Theatre, in Church Square, will host a matinee and evening performance of the play on Saturday, September 4.
Tickets, priced 10 each, are available from Harborough District Council Offices, in Adam and Eve Street, Harborough, by logging on to www.11hrproductions.co.uk or by phoning 0116 2831646.
