TWELVE phone boxes in the Harborough district have been saved from the axe but doubts remain over a further 28.
The news was broken to Harborough District Council by BT last week.

Cllrs Barbara Johnson and Sarah Hill, who campaigned to save the box near the junction of The Broadway and The Crescent, in Harborough, and sent in a petition of over 120 signatures to BT, are relieved that this box is to stay.

Mrs Johnson said: "The reasons given by BT for allowing the call box to remain are that the volume of calls has increased and there is evidence of emergency calls."

The 12 phone boxes which have been saved from being axed are as follows:
The Broadway/The Crescent, Market Harborough; Hamilton Lane, Scraptoft; Oaks Rd, Great Glen; Whitmore Timber Co, Main Road, Claybrooke Magna, Lutterworth; Devitt Way, Broughton Astley; Woodway Road/Ryderway, Lutterworth; Leicester Rd/, Crescent Rd, Lutterworth; Outside Post Office, Bitteswell, Lutterworth; Outside Working Mens Club, Fleckney Rd, Kibworth; Leicester Rd, Tilton On The Hill; Main Street, Bushby; Lowesby, Leicester.

British Telecom (BT) are still in consultation with HDC with regards to the remaining 28 phone boxes which are:
Mowsley Village; Saddington Road, Fleckney; Main Street, Saddington; Laughton, Lutterworth; Main Street, Willoughby Waterleys; The Square, Shearsby, Lutterworth; Main Street, Bruntingthorpe, Lutterworth; Village Hall, Peatling Magna; Opp Cock Inn, Lutterworth Road, Arnesby; Main Street, Carlton Curlieu; Near Post Office, Post Office Lane, Newton Harcourt; Nr Blacksmiths, Main Street, Little Stretton; Main Street, Kings Norton; Main Street, Gaulby, Goadby; Main Street, Tugby; Church Cottage, Church Lane, Stoughton; Peveril Road, Ashby Magna, Lutterworth; Wibtoft, Lutterworth; Leicester Road/Crescent Road, Lutterworth; Post Office, Bitteswell, Lutterworth; Middle Street, Owston, Oakham; Main Street, Catthorpe, Lutterworth; Welland Ave, Gartree, Market Harborough; Thorpe Langton Road, Thorpe Langton, Market Harborough; Middle Street, Foxton; Main Street, Blaston, Market Harborough; East Norton Road, Horninghold, Market Harborough; Main Street, Drayton; Welford Road, South Kilworth, Lutterworth; Lutterworth Road, North Kilworth, Lutterworth.
