HARBOROUGH residents are being warned to guard against rogue traders charging high prices for needless home improvements.
The scam imvolves “salesmen” visiting homes offering a free home survey which they say is to check that the homeowner is not wasting energy.

They then charge high prices for unnecessary work, particularly damp proofing.

David Bull, Head of Leicestershire Trading Standards, said: “We deal with many complaints regarding unsolicited doorstep property repair and maintenance problems, the majority involving elderly consumers.

“As winter approaches we expect to see a rise in complaints about tree surgery, fencing work and roof repairs. These conmen rely on people not knowing how much a job should cost, so they can charge well over the odds.”

Residents who are in doubt about a trader or want to report an incident should contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
