THE SILVER screen is to make a return to Welford for the first time in 50 years.
A rural cinema group will be coming to Welford Village Hall on Saturday, October 10, to screen 2005 black comedy Keeping Mum (certificate 15) which stars Rowan Atkinson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Maggie Smith and Patrick Swayze.

If it proves a success
it is hoped the showings could become a regular event in the village.

Cinema showings were a regular part of village life during the 1950s, with showings each Tuesday at the village hall.

In those days, two trap doors in a passageway at the hall were used as projection holes.

Next month’s screening is being presented by Centre Screen Northamptonshire, which is managed by Phoenix Independent Cinema of Leicester and uses portable cinema equipment to bring popular films to rural locations.

The scheme receives funding from the UK Film Council and local authorities including Northamptonshire County Council and Daventry District Council.

Phyllis Hayhurst, village hall secretary, said: “We are looking forward to the return of the cinema. It has received a good response so far so we will see how it goes and hopefully it can become a regular thing.”

Refreshments will be available and there will be a chance for the audience to comment on the showing and make suggestions afterwards.

Tickets for the screening, which starts at 8pm, cost £4 and are available from Mrs Hayhurst by phoning 01858 575284.
