Architects win nominations
A FARMHOUSE conversion built with green technology and a house built specially to meet the needs of the disabled homeowner are up for architecture awards in a prestigious industry scheme.
Fennylands Barn, a four-bedroom farmhouse with office space at Brook Meadow campsite near Sibbertoft, has earned its architect Claire Hart and Snug Projects a nomination in the Small Scheme of the Year category at the ProCon Leicestershire Awards 2012.
And architect Michael Lavender’s £210,000 home in Coventry Road, Harborough is also up for an award in the same category.
Built by JH Hallam Contracts, the £454,000 Fennylands Barn project features sustainable technology, including a ground source heat pump and solar water heating.
The finished building for clients Jasper and Mary Hart is both a house for the farm’s on-site manager, and an office welcoming visitors to the campsite and caravan storage business.
The Coventry Road home, built by JCH Contractors features a fully accessible ground floor, allowing its disabled owner – Brian Monk of H Monk & Sons carpets firm – to travel freely around.
The building includes a ‘secret garden’ in the middle of the house, bringing natural light into the rest of the home.
Mr Lavender said: “I thrived when faced with the challenge of making a building that was highly practical as accommodation but equally a delight to live in, with a few surprises.”
The ProCon awards, sponsored by Gateley, Westleigh Developments and Alyesworth Fleming, are in their tenth year.
The winners will be revealed before more than 600 property professionals and their clients at a ceremony at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium on November 15.
Pam Allardice, chair of ProCon and a director at Howes Percival, said: “The number and quality of the applications received this year show that, despite the very difficult economic conditions, many excellent and innovative projects have been carried out and completed this year across Leicestershire and Rutland.”
