A JOB swap between a councillor and an apprentice took place at a school in Harborough to highlight Apprentice Week.
Sam Donington was taken on as an apprentice by Farndon Fields Primary School after they advertised for one through South Leicestershire College.
To highlight Apprentice Week, Cllr Jo Brodrick took on Sam’s role for the day at the school undertaking various administrative duties.
Cllr Brodrick took to the task with enthusiasm as she was shown by Sam how to photocopy, upload information to the school’s website and register absences.
The college had advertised three apprentice roles at schools in Harborough back in July but at the time there was a poor take up.
As a result the Mail ran a story about the apprenticeships on offer in the town and as a result Sam got in touch with the college.
Although apprenticeships are not well paid, those working as apprentices get vital work experience, on-the-job training and also achieve a level 2 NVQ and a technical certificate.
Cllr Brodrick said that there is now a greater take up of apprenticeships and they sometimes have 20 people apply for one position.
She said: “What we want to get across to people is that apprenticeships are a really great opportunity.”
Cllr Brodrick added that they can be an alternative to University for young people but can also be applied for by people of all ages.
