A delicatessen from Great Bowden will be taking on some big UK towns and cities in the final of a national awards scheme on Tuesday.
Welton’s, of The Green in the village, has made it through to the finals of the Local Businesses Accelerators (LBA) scheme where it stands to win £10,000 and mentoring from Dragons’ Den judge Deborah Meaden.
Is up against 15 finalists from places such as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Yorkshire, Wales, the West Midlands and London.
But as well as the top prize, Welton’s is also in the running for The People’s Choice award which will go to whichever nominee in the grand final to receive the most public votes. There is still time to vote for Welton’s by visiting www.newspaper soc.org.uk.
The LBA campaign, now in its second year, is run by The Newspaper Society and was backed by Prime Minister David Cameron.
Its aim is to highlight the power of local newspaper advertising and to accelerate up-and-coming businesses.
It invited every newspaper across the country to submit entries and the Welton’s package of diverse services it offers to customers attracted the eye of the national judges.
The winners will be announced at the swanky Altitude venue at Millbank Tower in south-west London on Tuesday.
Lynne Anderson, the Newspaper Society’s communications and marketing director, said: “I would like to wish all the finalists the very best of luck in the awards, and urge the Mail’s readers to get behind Welton’s in The People’s Choice video vote.”
