Supermarket giant set to start building store
BUILDING work could get started on a new supermarket for Harborough by the end of March.
Waitrose will be opening in Harborough in the autumn in Springfield Street at the former premises of the Sandicliffe Ford car dealership.
The site is currently occupied by the Harborough branch of Kettering-based The Furniture Centre.
However, it announced last week the start of a closing down sale which began at the weekend with half price off furniture.
Last week Waitrose confirmed that it hoped to start work on the site by the end of March but by April at the latest.
When the supermarket opens in Harborough it said it will create up to 120 jobs in the town.
The arrival of the chain here will also result in a line-up of four major supermarket brands in the same street.
Rumours of Waitrose’s interest in the site have circulated for several years but it only confirmed its intent to purchase the site in April last year.
The nearest Waitrose store to Harborough at present is in Oadby – a store which opened in October last year – while a Lutterworth branch opened last year.
