Vintage clothing finds new home

A vintage shop that sells fashion from the 1920s through to the 1980s and homewares has found a new home.

Alice ‘n’ May, which was previously based in Husbands Bosworth, will now be operating from Kibworth Antiques Centre off Leicester Road.

The firm was started up by owner Alison Handford in December 2012.

The business has relocated to the Kibworth Antiques Centre as Alison said she was not getting enough footfall at the shop in Husbands Bosworth.

Its new site at the antiques centre has 100sq ft of floorspace to display its goods. The former Husbands Bosworth premises is now being rented out to the parish council.

Alison said: “Currently I have got a really good selection of wedding dresses and outfits going back to the 1940s but also the 1960s and the 1970s as well as the 1980s.

“I think that is the biggest draw and nobody else is doing that.

“I also have vintage china that people collect for their weddings. A lot of girls come and ask for the china for their weddings.

“I realised there was a niche for the outfits for weddings.

“I have 1940s outfits in excellent condition.”

She sources outfits from vintage sales, France and eBay but says she does not rely solely on eBay.

Alison added: “I have had people comment that the prices are very reasonable, which they are.

“I think being in Kibworth will attract more young people to my store because of the location.”

Alice ‘n’ May developed due to Alison’s love of vintage, recycling and individuality.

She said: “It is named after my grandmother Alice May, a woman of beauty and style, who inspired me by living through so many decades of change, experiencing our history in fashion and furnishings.

“At Alice‘n’May’s we enjoy the nostalgia of the 20s through to the 80s by reinventing clothes and interior decorating from those times. It’s fun and fab.”
