A church will re-open on Sunday following restoration work which has seen new heating and lighting installed.

St Peter and St Paul in Great Bowden will celebrate the completion of the work withcarols on the Green from 6pm, followed by refreshments in the church and bell ringing.

The Rev James Shakespeare is inviting people who would like to view the alterations to join him at 7pm.

The vicar, who abseiled down the church in the summer to help raise money for the alterations, said: “Those people who have been following the progress of the work will know how hard everybody has been working to get the church ready for Christmas.

“This is the first stage of our drive to make the church more accessible, flexible and welcoming – better able to meet the needs of the community in 21st century.”

As well as fundraising events, the Market Harborough and the Bowdens Charity has also provided funding.

Special days of prayer are being held on December 16 and 18, to re-hallow the building and pray for all in need

The Rev Shakespeare said the church intends to continue its range of activities and links with Great Bowden School and is hoping to set up a new coffee morning drop-in for young parents and more regular concerts and social events.
