People in Kibworth will finally be coming off a long waiting list for allotments after a planning application for a new site was approved.
Parish councils have a statutory responsibility to provide allotments for parishioners if more than five people petition for them.
There has been a waiting list across Kibworth Harcourt and Beauchamp of more than 30 people for five years.
Kibworth Joint Recreation Committee has spent this time trying to find suitable land.
Oxford University’s Merton College has agreed to lease three acres to the committee and the planning application to place an allotment there was given the go ahead by Harborough Council at a meeting last Tuesday.
The land set aside is off West Langton Road in Kibworth Harcourt.
Leicestershire County Council had opposed the application due to concerns about traffic on the A6 being too much of a hazard to allotment-users.
Barbara Freestone, chairman of the joint recreation committee, said: “The major achievement is getting planning permission.
“Without that we wouldn’t be able to use that site.
“It is a major hurdle that we have got over.”
The committee has applied for Section 106 funding – cash given by developers for community projects – to develop the site and it is hoped the allotments could be ready for use by the start of the growing season in 2014.
