FRIENDS of a man who has been battling serious illness gathered for a fundraising afternoon – although a football match due to be played fell foul of the weather.

Pat Molloy (32), from Desborough, was diagnosed with a brain tumour and also suffered a stroke in the summer, and frequently has to travel to Oxford for treatment.

Friends decided to arrange a football match between Kettering FC and Mr Molloy’s friends to raise money to help him pay for petrol.

And although heavy rain forced the postponement of the game, scores of friends gathered at Raunds Town FC’s Kiln Park for an afternoon featuring a disco, raffle and an auction.

Friend Justin Lovegrove said he “couldn’t be grateful enough” for the support given to Pat, and said he hoped the day’s events would raise more than £1,000 for Pat and his family.

Among the items up for auction were stadium tours at Aston Villa, Leicester City and Celtic, along with a signed England 1966 World Cup photograph.

Mr Lovegrove added: “Hopefully the money raised will go a long way to helping him and his family.”

The match is set to be rearranged for a date in December.
