Event will offer ways to stop catalytic converter thieves

A CRIME prevention event to help motorists protect their catalytic convertors is being held on Saturday.

Officers from Harborough police will be joined by a security company and Neighbourhood Watch at the Sainsbury’s store in Springfield Street for the event between 10am and 3pm.

Crime prevention advice about how to protect catalytic convertors will be available as will cut-price etching kits, allowing motorists to permanently etch a unique code onto the converter.

There will also be advice on other options such as catalytic cages and alarms.

Anyone who has had a catalytic converter stolen before will have any security item they buy at the event fitted free-of-charge.

Police community support officer (PCSO) Martin Doyle, said: “If you own any sort of vehicle with a high clearance from the ground then it would be worth considering some form of protection for your catalytic convertor.

“Having them etched is the cheapest option and will deter thieves who know that marked property is difficult to sell but motorists might also want to consider cages and alarms.”
