THIEVES plumbed new depths when they targeted a family home to steal lead from the roof.

The attempted theft of lead from a residential roof took place in Gardiner Street, Harborough.

Stefan Glissmann was at home in bed when his neighbour knocked on the door in the early hours of Sunday, January 15, to tell him he had just seen two men at the back of Mr Glissmann’s property.

Mr Glissmann was shocked to find the men on his roof and he shouted at them to scare them off.

Initially he thought there was nothing stolen and no damage done and that the two men had been trying to break into his home.

It wasn’t until days later that his wife phoned him to say there was a problem with the lead flashing on their roof.

Mr Glissmann realised the two men he had seen in his garden had been attempting to strip the lead from his roof by prying it up with their bare hands.

There have been numerous crimes in the Harborough district in recent years where thieves have stolen lead from church roofs and businesses.

It is the first time a report has come to light of lead thieves targeting a residential home in the Harborough area.

Mr Glissmann had been asleep at home when the attempted theft took place, at about 4.30am.

He lives with his wife and two children.

He has come forward to warn other home-owners that thieves may now be targeting family homes and that people should be aware this could happen on their doorstep.

He has reported the incident to police.

The damage to the roof will cost him £200 to repair and he had only spent money on it recently.
