Volunteers sought for prison monitoring board
VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help monitor standards at Gartree Prison.
The Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) at HMP Gartree is looking for new volunteers to join its team.
The board monitors the prison in an effort to ensure it is being run properly and to a good standard.
The prison has expanded in recent years and has 680 inmates serving life sentences.
The board, members of which are appointed by the Minister of Justice, needs six new people.
Volunteers must be aged 18 or over but need no special qualifications or experience as training is provided.
New appointees will join existing members of the board in monitoring the prison, talking to inmates and staff and attending monthly meetings.
Carlton Dale, chairman of the board, said members need to be open minded, caring, good at listening, have the ability to challenge and have good communication skills.
He added: “The role of the IMB is to monitor the day-to-day life of Gartree, ensuring that proper standards and decency are maintained. Our members have unrestricted access to the prison and prisoners.”
