Ed Stafford on Olorua Island in Fiji after spending 60 days alone on an uninhabited island
An adventurer who once walked the length of the Amazon River has taken on a new desert island survival challenge which is being broadcast on a TV documentary.
Ed Stafford is starring in Discovery Channel programme Naked and Marooned with Ed Stafford.
Mr Stafford, who lives in Hallaton, started filming for his 60-day survival challenge in October of last year.
The former Fleckney boy scout was left “washed up, naked and alone” on a desert island south-east of Fiji.
The 37-year-old had only a camera with him when he was abandoned on the island.
He had no food, water, clothes, knives or tools and was completely reliant on his own survival skills to get him through the two months.
The programme shows Mr Stafford eating geckos raw with tail still twitching in order to get vital protein before he is able to build a fire.
There are also clips showing Mr Stafford looking completely desperate having been unable to secure enough water for the day.
One of the many challenges he faced was finding a way to fish without coming face to face with the deadly sharks that inhabit the surrounding waters of the island.
He said, however, that one of the biggest difficulties while he was out there was the isolation.
Mr Stafford said: “Unless you share things with someone, there is less meaning; I would look at the most beautiful sunset and I would just think ‘there’s nobody to share this with’.”
The series is showing on Thursdays on the Discovery Channel at 9pm.
Mr Stafford is also due to appear in a future adventure programme for the channel.
He said: “I’m amazingly lucky to have been in this position.”
