A SWIMMING event organised by the Rotary Club of Market Harborough is making a splash around town after its launch this week.

Market Harborough SwiMarathon is taking place on Saturday, April 21, and Sunday, April 22, at Harborough Leisure Centre.

Organisers from the Rotary Club said there has been a great deal of interest from teams wanting to take part.

Last year the event raised £5,400 which was given to charities and organisations in the Harborough area.

A further £1,600 was given to the Rotary Internation End Polio Now campaign.

The SwiMarathon is aiming to attract teams of six people made up of friends, businesses, school groups or sports clubs.

Ian Clarkson, Rotarian and chair of the organsising group, said: “This is mainly an opportunity to enjoy a fun swim with your friends and good music.

“The sponsorship is a good way to help support local groups to make a difference in and around Market Harborough.”

Teams are made up of up to six people as the idea of the marathon is to not make it too strenuous for anyone taking part in the relay.

Last year the oldest contestant was 80 while the youngest was just five.

Each team will get a certificate for entering and there are trophies for the team which raises the most money, swims the most lengths, has the most people entering from one organisation and whoever has the best team name.

All money raised will be divided between groups and grant applications will be made after the event through the Mail.

Any businesses looking to sponsor can contact Mr Clarkson on 01858 431558 or email swimarathon@rotarymarkethar borough.org.uk.

To sign up to swim email the above address or contact Jim Davies on 01858 433426 to book a place for your team.

Application forms can be downloaded at www.rotarymarketharborough.org.uk/swimarathon.
