Latest development means a bypass is even more essential

I REFER to the Harborough Mail of Thursday, October 29, and in particular the Strategy Key Diagram contained therein.

Here in Lubenham we are concerned about the wind turbines on the ridge above the village, oblivious up till now, it seems, of the next assault. I refer to the development area to the west of Harborough and reaching out to Lubenham – 1,000 houses on the Airfield Farm site creeping down towards us.

We needn’t worry, the planners and the district council are going to provide us with a ‘green wedge’ to separate Lubenham from the town. How wide is a green wedge? The width of someone’s back yard? The size of a slice of cake? Where will the surface water from the business and factory development and the new village drain? My guess is into the River Welland via the watercourse on the eastern side of the site which drains to the Welland.

What with 1,000 houses here and 900 off the Farndon Road all draining to the river, we shouldn’t worry ourselves about flooding, should we?

When Airfield Farm was first mooted as a business site I was concerned about the additional traffic levels through Lubenham and Harborough and produced a sketch plan showing a relatively inexpensive bypass linking the A4304 west of Lubenham to the B6047 Leicester Road north of Harborough. I was told there were no funds available for such a project even though it was very feasible.

Is not a bypass even more important now to cope with the growth at Airfield Farm as shown on the Strategy Key Diagram? Doesn’t the county council need to take another look at the bypass now before it is too late? Shouldn’t the district council levy Section 106 monies to pay for it in conjunction with the Road Authority?

John Hammond,

Acorn Close,

Lubenham.
