Worthy causes and charities are being invited to apply for grants from the communal pot of cash raised from the Late Night Shopping event.

Thousands of people turned out for the annual extravaganza in Harborough town centre on Friday, December 7 , last year.

The ever-popular event featured reindeer, carol singing, fairground rides and games and live music and entertainment in the streets, which were closed to traffic for the night.

And proceeds from the event are now being distributed to bring a boost to charitable causes across Harborough district.

Because of the event’s success the committee is able to distribute a total pot of about £2,000 this year.

Late Night Shopping chairman Martin Hill said: “It was another very good event.

“People were very generous with their donations to the charity stalls and our own fundraising and we very much appreciate that.

“We’re looking forward to helping local causes although we hope that people recognise that we’re spreading the money among smaller groups where it will make a real difference.

“It’s always a good-natured event and everyone is there to have fun. We had a few new attractions for people to see, which is always popular.”

To apply for a share of the cash, write to: Harborough and Lutterworth Mail, 9 Northampton Road, Market Harborough, Leics, LE16 9HB, explaining on an A4 sheet of paper why your group would benefit from a grant.

Remember to include the name and address of your organisation or group, a contact name, daytime telephone number and email address if you have one.

Completed applications must reach the Mail’s office by midday on Monday, February 11.

During the event shops put on mulled wine and glasses of fizz to draw in the crowds as shoppers took advantage of later opening times to buy Christmas presents.

A number of groups set out stalls to capitalise on the numbers there and to raise awareness of their causes.
