ONE of the original Olympic torches which carried the flame for the 1948 London Games will also be coming to Harborough this summer.

A buzz of excitement swept through the area in the autumn when it was announced the 2012 Olympic torch will be passing through Harborough on Monday, July 2, on its way to this year’s Games.

Now, it has been confirmed its illustrious predecessor from 1948 will be on show at a primary schools sporting fun day being organised for Saturday, July 7, in Welland Park, Harborough.

The event is being organised jointly by the Harborough Lions Club, Robert Smyth Academy and Welland Park Community College.

Marianne Boyle from Harborough District Council, which is sponsoring the event, said: “The 1948 torch is being held by Loughborough University as part of the Olympic legacy.

“It’s great that we are able to have it for that day. People will be able to have their photos taken with it.”

4 People from sports clubs, youth groups and other community organisations are invited to a meeting next week to suggest ways to celebrate the arrival of the 2012 Olympic torch in Harborough.

The meeting will be on Wednesday, from 6.30pm, in the Cygnet Room at the Three Swans Hotel. For more details email Chris Sewart on c.sewart@harborough.gov.uk or phone 07786 276365 or 01858 821392.
