Air cadets’ appeal to keep group thriving

The Harborough branch of the air cadets has issued an appeal for staff to keep the squadron thriving.

Last year three members of the staff team left the squadron to pursue other interests, which reduced the team by a third and Commanding Officer Flt Lt Valerie Smith is retiring at the end of the year .

She said: “The situation will only get worse. Without more staff it will be more difficult to continue with the range of cadet activities, particularly outdoor and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.”

It is looking to recruit male and female staff particularly those interested in outdoor activities who are able to help out on occasional weekends. Other staff would be considered if they have skills or experience that could add to its training programme.

Initially staff would be appointed as civilian instructors but if they would like to progress to uniformed members of staff that would be an added advantage, with training available where necessary. The squadron is also recruiting new cadets.

Flt Lt Smith added: “We have just over 40 cadets and recruit two intakes a year to keep numbers at around that level. The squadron offers training in aviation-related subjects that can lead to BTEC qualifications. As well as a championship marching band, outdoor activities include hill walking, camping, sailing and adventurous training camps.

An open evening for prospective cadets (aged 13 to 17) and staff (20 and over) is being held at the squadron HQ in the Harborough Leisure Centre grounds, off Northampton Road, at 7.30pm on Monday, March 18.
